That's Better - or is it?
Following the recent round of storms now predicted to be a regular occurnece it is appropriate to touch on insurance implications.
When replacing damaged fittings etc., an insureer will always question whether there is any betterment. If your 20 year old fridge is flooded and ruined will it be replaced "new for old," or will it reflect the value of a 20 year old fridge now worth nothing and would probably cost to have it removed. The wallpaper lovingly hung 20 years ago and still servicable until water damaged and if replaced new for old would result in betterment of 20 years. Should the insurance company pay for such costs when it amounts to renovation rather than restoration. Likely a deduction in any pay out would reflect the value placed on any betterment.
